My husband has decided to get on-board with healthy eating and getting back in shape, and that has made a huge difference for me the last few days. It was my first week back at work, and his support was the only reason I was able to keep myself from throwing takeout on the table every night.
At the same time, I realized that Jonah seems to have the most stomach problems on days I have soda. Because I’m not sleeping much and work starts at 6 am, I’ve been completely addicted to diet soda for a very long time — pretty much since I was pregnant with Micah. Of course, given the fact that I was drinking tons of artificial sugars and chemicals every day it makes total sense that my poor baby is super gassy! I really love my caffeine, but I didn’t want to switch to regular soda because of the sugar, and I don’t drink coffee or tea…so I’ve been caffeine free for the better part of this week.
Because I still need to function while I’m getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night, I decided to start juicing again to see if that would help me be more alert. What a huge difference!
Not long after Micah was born my husband bought a juicer, but we’ve only used it intermittently until now (mostly out of laziness I’m sad to say). As much as I’ve complained in the past, I have to admit he made a really good choice when he picked the one we have — it’s easy to use, easy to take apart, and easy to clean. It’s actually the same juicer they used in the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, and even though I think they take juice fasting a bit too far I would still recommend the documentary too.
I’ve also been trying to find new healthy breakfast ideas. Micah has been refusing to eat almost anything healthy for over a month now, so I’m trying to find ways to trick him into it. I’ve found that he’ll eat protein pancakes and protein waffles without much of a hassle, so I’ve been trying to add more healthy ingredients without changing the taste too much. So far I’ve been able to make them with oatmeal, flax-seed, and cottage cheese without him spitting them out at me, so I’d call that a success so far!
In other news, my kiddos are growing up WAY too fast! Kinsey got a new bed, which means Micah has started sleeping in her toddler bed. It’s completely crazy how easily he transitioned into a big boy bed!
Just since Jonah was born, Micah has grown up so much! I swear he learns a new word every day, and he’s trying so hard to be a good big brother. Every time the baby cries he comes to get me and asks me to go get him (“Mommy–baby!”), and he’s always trying to rub his back or give him his binky. Of course he’s not very gentle so I have to be really careful how much I let him help, but I love how much he loves his brother.
He actually asked to hold Jonah, and when he did he held him with one hand and patted his back with the other — so sweet! He also stole one of his sister’s dolls so he could burp it while I burped Jonah, and he even gave it one of his diapers. He’s going to make the best Daddy someday…
All in all, it’s been a rough transition getting back to work this week, but my family always makes me happy 🙂 Life is good!
I have started juicing myself.. I have a few great juice blends but what ever I concocted today was almost not drinkable..please help..what is a good blend for greens??

It’s a bit hit and miss for me because I normally juice whatever fruits or veggies are about to turn, but there are a couple of strategies that I think really help. Oranges, apples, bell peppers, and carrots are all very sweet, and really help to take away the overpowering taste of greens. It also depends what type of greens you juice — I primarily juice spinach for my greens because the flavor is fairly mild. I’ll use some cucumber and celery, but their flavor is really overpowering so using small quantities is important. Lemon can help to lighten up a really earthy juice too, as long as you don’t juice the rind. As a last resort, when something just didn’t turn out well, pineapple juice can fix almost anything.
My favorite greens combo is really simple though — spinach and oranges mix really well, it’s easily my favorite way to drink my greens.
